On Tuesday I had a session with Katie in St.Paul. This time of year is outstanding for portraits. We photographed at mid-day. During the summer that is the toughest light to work with. The sun is straight over head and the light is really difficult. In October (at least in Minneapolis), the sun hangs at a nice 45 degree angle.
That means the entire day is great for portraits. In October the wind can get interesting, but the light is insanely good!
2 weeks ago Katie ran the Twin Cities Marathon. That totally blows me away. Then last night I was watching a documentary on Netflix called Running the Sahara.

3 guys ran across the Sahara together,
- 4,300 miles total
- 111 days
- 39 miles or 1.5 marathons per day
- 165 total marathons
Don’t get me wrong, running 1 marathon is amazing. Way to go Katie! But imagine 165 marathons in 111 days. Wow.
For Katie’s session, she wanted all things city, with a bit of tree color thrown in for good measure. Katie is 5’11″ tall and after the marathon is probably in the best shape of her life. The dresses she came with really helped show off her hard work.
For the first half of the shoot I knew exactly what I wanted. For the second half, I knew I wanted Grand Ave, but was improvising. I wanted to make sure to throw in a number of things that were completely new to me. The things in the beginning of the shoot were treated in new ways, even though the places were familiar.
My favorite find was the blue wall, which was on the side of a very unassuming shop along Grand. I loved the way it pulled the blue out of Katie’s eyes.
Thanks for a fun session Katie. Enjoy your sneak peek!
